I’m genuinely excited for this game, as I am for all MLS Cups, even if something predictable happens. I started watching MLS Cup in 2004 and have never been treated to a bad game. Even the worse games of the seven I have watched live went to overtime. I don’t think this game will be bad, I think it will actually pretty much mirror the best one I have seen: MLS Cup 2008.

The Galaxy will start off strong and get a goal in the first half – Robbie Keane is my pick to get it – and cruise to halftime leading 1-0. After the half, one of the Dynamo’s 394702347230 six footers will equalize setting up a dramatic finish in which Keane will score twice after the 85th minute. Yes, I’m predicting the first hat-trick in MLS Cup history. I think Keane is on really good form and will exploit the Houston backline with smart runs.

Houston still has a chance in this game, but I think that they just don’t have enough quality. They will probably have to score two or three goals on set pieces to win this game, and with Brad Davis out, I just don’t see that happening.

Prediction: L.A. Galaxy 3 Houston Dynamo 1

MVP: Robbie Keane

In the Super Bowl era (1966-present) of the National Football League, the quarterback position has easily been the most important position. The best quarterbacks win the most games and usually win the Super Bowl. Quarterback is probably more important than any other position in any other game, and yet there have been so few elite quarterbacks. Elite quarterbacks are so rare that teams are willing to spend millions of dollars drafting a position that has a high washout rate just for the chance to get one.

In the Super Bowl era, there have been either 19 or 21 elite quarterbacks (depending on how you feel about Namath and Roethlisberger) who have combined to win 32 of the 45 Super Bowls. Super Bowls have thus been won 71% of the time by a team containing an elite quarterback. The position is only becoming more important as seven of the eight last Super Bowls have been won by a team lead by one of these players (Eli Manning in Super Bowl XLII is the exception). Getting an elite quarterback should be priority number one for every NFL team; only four of these 21 players (Fran Tarkenton, Dan Fouts, Dan Marino and Jim Kelly) have failed to win a title for their team.

Full disclosure: This is the first American Football article (commonly referred to as “throwball” in my circle of writing) that I have ever written. I am a Green Bay Packers fan and do not consider myself to be an expert on football. I mostly write about soccer for the blog, but after seeing my team go on an epic run to the Super Bowl last year and continue their momentum into this season by beating the Saints 42-34, I had to say at least something.

I believe the Packers will repeat as Super Bowl Champions this year. They will be the first team since the New England Patriots in 03-04 to do so. This is somewhat of a bold prediction considering that just one of the 256 regular season NFL games have been played, but I really can’t see this season going any other way and here’s why.

They’re baaaack – our weekly NFL Picks! Last season, Nick tied Dylan. It came down to the LAST game, so we still have not had a definitive winner. Let’s see if this season can have one sole champion.
